Introduction
to the Center
Established in September， 1984 and reorganized in June， 1999,
Center for Studies of Sociological Theory & Method of Rinmin
University, has been put in the list of Key Research Bases for
Humanistic and Social Studies at General Institutions of Higher
Learning subordinate to Ministry of Education, with Professor
Zheng Hangsheng as the director. Under the Center, there are
Research Rooms of Sociology, Social Measurement, Social Structure
and Foreign Sociology. Presently, 16 full-time researchers (among
whom 9 are professors) and 18 part-time researchers (among whom
17 are professors) are working for the center. The academic
leadingpersonnel include Prof. Zheng Hangsheng, Prof. Li Qiang,
Prof. Li Lulu, Prof. Pan Suiming and Prof. Liu Shaojie.
For years, researchers of the Center have been actively engaged
in the exploration of establishing sociological theories with
Chinese characteristics and have painstakingly promoted the
application of sociology to the contemporary reform of China.
They have preliminarily put forward theories of “social operation”
and “social transformation” that are considerably influential
both at home and abroad. Meanwhile, they have also fruitfully
studied the theory and practice involving the indigenization
of sociology.
The Center is now to launch out into researches on forward
theoretical issues of sociology and the stratification of Chinese
society. With the support of Ministry and Education, the university
and fraternal units, we are confident in building the Center
into a pivot for academic studies and information exchanges
in the field of sociological theory and method, as well as a
base for the training of advanced talents in sociology.

Seniors of Sociology
Sociology has a history of nearly half a century in Renmin
University of China. During the first years of the fifties,
when the university had just been established, the nationwide
adjustment of academic subjects in institutions of higher learning
took place. While sociology as a specialty was cancelled, a
number of well-known sociologists, such as Chen Da, Li Jinghan,
Wu Jingchao, Zhao Chengxin, Dai Shiguang, Chen Wenxian, Quan
Weitian, and others, came to the university to work. All these
senior sociologists laid a solid foundation for the restoration
and development of sociology in the university at the beginning
of the eighties.
